About the Global Parcel Delivery Market Insight Report 2017

The report provides an analysis of the parcels market and the leading carriers.

The parcels market continues to grow

The parcels market was almost US$300bn in 2016, up from just over US$270bn in 2015. North America is the largest regional parcels market by value, worth just under US$100bn in 2015, making it slightly larger than Asia-Pacific. However, Asia-Pacific is growing faster and we expect it to surpass North America by 2017. Double-digit growth in Asia-Pacific has been driven by China, which accounts for 47% of the regional total. Chinese parcels volumes have increased rapidly from 1.2bn in 2007, to 20.6bn in 2015.

Internet retail growth

Growth in internet retail is driving parcel delivery volumes. Global internet retail sales were in excess of US$1,600bn in 2015, up by 25% from the previous year.

Internet retail growth is particularly high in emerging economies as their populations embrace shopping online, in many cases bypassing the development of the bricks-and-mortar retailers seen in the west.

China has had internet retail growth of 35% per year. As a result, China now sends more parcels than the US. In 2000, China only had two million internet users. In 2013, there were 600m internet users. Growth is still rapid with recent estimates suggesting that, by 2020, it would be larger than the combined internet retail markets of the US, UK, Japan, Germany and France.

Increasing competition

UPS is the largest parcel delivery company in terms of parcel revenues. However, with the acquisition of TNT Express, FedEx has closed the gap in parcels revenue between it and UPS to US$5bn. Both now have parcel revenues twice that of their next nearest competitor, Deutsche Post DHL. The leading 12 parcel delivery companies had combined parcel revenues of almost US$190bn in 2015. The leading parcel delivery company handled over 5bn parcels in 2015. All companies in the top ten each handled more than 1bn parcels, and they handled more than 22.5bn parcels between them.

Margin recovery for integrators

A notable development for the latest year in review was an improvement in margins at UPS and FedEx, making them significantly more profitable than most of their smaller competitors:

– UPS Domestic Package margins grew from 8.0% in 2014 to 13.0% in 2015.
– UPS International Package margins grew from 12.9% in 2014 to 17.6% in 2015.
– FedEx Express margins grew from 5.8% in 2015 to 9.5% in 2016 (May year end).

Merger and acquisition activity

Acquisitions have played a significant role in the growth of the global parcels industry as national players have expanded outside their home territories. Significant strategic moves which have shaped the way the global industry looks today include the following:

– UPS’s two waves of acquisitions across Europe to build up its continent-wide network, first in the 1990s, focusing on international traffic and then in the 2000s, to build scale in domestic markets
– Deutsche Post’s acquisition of DHL from 1998-2002 and its numerous acquisitions in European domestic markets, including its 2016 acquisition of UK Mail.
– Royal Mail and La Poste’s acquisitions to put together their GLS and DPD networks in Europe and beyond.
– Recent acquisitions by FedEx to build its domestic businesses in Europe, followed by its acquisition of TNT Express to make it into a leading European carrier.
– Japan Post’s acquisition of Toll Group in 2015.

Market forecasts

Apex Insight believes the market will continue to grow over the period 2015-2021, supported by:

– Continued growth of internet retail with further growth in the more advanced markets such as China, the US and UK, and less-mature markets being expected to catch up, to a degree, over the next few years.
– The on-going reconfiguration of global supply chains with increased reliance on just-in-time production and a large proportion of global manufacturing having been outsourced by European and North American companies to Asia over the last couple of decades.

We expect market performance to be driven by continued uptake of internet retail in all locations, further development in emerging economies such as China, Russia and Brazil and steady economic growth in the advanced economies. China is forecast to grow from under US$50bn in 2016 to over US$100bn in 2021.

Asia Pacific will continue to be the fastest growing region, overtaking North America as the largest regional market in 2017, to be significantly larger by the end of our forecast period.
